Course Description: My plan of instruction continually emphasizes continued skill development toward the 10th grade benchmarks (CIM) in writing, reading, literature, and speaking.  The course integrates literary studies of drama, poetry, short stories, and novels exploring classical and contemporary themes in a cross-section of global literature.

Required Texts and materials:  Student will be expected to have appropriate text and materials with him/her at the beginning of class every day.

                                    1/3 final exam

Daily Work:

Daily work is 50% of your grade.

A.  Homework:  Do this at home.  More people fail by blowing off the homework.

B. Notebook & Writing Warm up:  You will be keeping a notebook solely for this class.  These notebooks will be collected at random.

C. Discussions / Participation:  Our discussions are designed to include everyone.  It is well worth your time to think of some tangible ways to show me that you are participating to a high degree in class consistently.  I will score each class discussion.

Behaviors of successful students:

Behaviors of the problem child:

Attendance:  You are responsible for all material presented in class whether you were able to attend or not.  Because you cannot replicate or “make up” class discussions, daily attendance is required.  If you are absent, it is your SOLE responsibility to get class notes, find out what assignments were given, and to hand them in on time.  I will not come and find you to fill you in.  I will be following the school attendance policy closely.   Be sure to resolve unexcused absences within 48 hours.  Unexcused absence= no credit.  After 10 absences in one semester for any reason, your grade may be dropped due to lack of participation.

Tardies:  Being late disrupts the class and shows lack of concern.  You are allowed two free tardies per quarter.  Every one after that is a detention.  Please be on time.

Late Work:  Getting behind on assignments puts a student in a cycle of failure.  Therefore, late work is an automatic 50% off.  No late work accepted after one week or within one week of a grading period.  Let’s not waste time on excuses and game playing.

Extra Credit:  You may ask me for additional work, and I will announce some opportunities from time to time.  Depending on the quality, 1-5% may be added to your semester grade.  Extra credit is no substitute for consistent homework and study.

Some General Rules:

*  Be prepared:            Please be in your ASSIGNED seat when the bell rings with your textbook, notebook, pens, and pencils as needed.

*  Be nice:                    Please use the appropriate social register.

Keep your voice at an appropriate classroom level - LOW.

Leave food, drinks, and gum in the cafeteria.  Water is encouraged.

No calculators, cell phones, headphones, or other class work.

All other school rules apply here.
