Animal Behavior                                    2003-2004

Assignments & Make-up Work

All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the due date unless otherwise specified. Late assignments will receive half credit. Work missed due to an excused absence may be made up. You are allowed one extra completion day for each day of an excused absence. Students with excessive excused absences are expected to make up the work within a reasonable time period. It is your responsibility to request make-up work for days you are absent. You may also check the THS website (ths.sps.lane.edu/thshrs) for class assignments. The website will be updated weekly. Work missed due to unexcused absences cannot be made up.

Field Trips

Field trips to two of the following locations are planned for this semester: the Oregon Zoo, Wildlife Safari, or the Oregon Aquarium. Field trips are not mandatory for passing the class, but if you wish to be eligible for field trips, you must meet the following requirement: no missing assignments, no unexcused absences, no more than 3 tardies, and a fee of $10-$15 (cash or check to THS) per trip to cover admission and transportation costs. If you meet the field trip requirements but cannot afford the fee, you may talk to the teacher privately regarding financial aid. If you do not attend the field trip, you are expected to be present in your regularly scheduled Animal Behavior class to complete an alternative assignment with a substitute.

Participation & Grading

Grades are calculated using point totals from daily work, homework, lab reports, projects, presentations, quizzes, tests, and class participation. You will receive 50 participation points at the beginning of each quarter and points are added (bonus points) or deducted (see Attendance & Tardies) accordingly. Your attitude and level of participation can tip the grading scale in one direction or another.

Attendance & Tardies

Due to the nature of this class (lecture, class discussion, video segments, hands-on labs, and presentations), prompt and regular attendance is essential. Unexcused absences will result in the loss of 10 points per absence from your participation grade and one detention per unexcused absence. Failure to serve detentions by the end of the quarter will result in an “Incomplete” on your report card. Excessive unexcused absences will result in a phone call home and a written referral. Every 3 tardies will result in the loss of 10 points (the equivalent of one unexcused absence) from your participation grade and a detention.

Behavior

No student has the right to disrupt class and deprive others of their education. In order to maintain a safe and positive learning environment, please:

1.       Be kind.

2.     Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean.

3.     Be yourself.

4.     Ask questions.

5.     Always do your best.

6.     Clean up after yourself.

Materials

There is no textbook for this class. However, you are expected to bring a notebook and something to write with to class every day. I STRONGLY recommend that you invest in a 1” binder filled with notebook paper that will become your “Animal Behavior Notebook.” This notebook will be used for keeping class notes, daily work, homework, lab reports, and other written assignments. In effect, this notebook will become your textbook. In addition, it is strongly recommended that you obtain an Internet sticker for research purposes throughout the semester. Internet forms are available from the library and from Ms. Fabbri.
