Natural Resources Fall
2002
All assignments are due
at the beginning of class on the due date unless otherwise specified. Late
assignments will receive half credit. Assignments will not be accepted after
more than one week. Work missed due to an excused absence may be made up. You
are allowed one extra completion day for each day of an excused absence.
Students with excessive excused absences are expected to make up the work
within a reasonable time period. It is
your responsibility to request make-up work for days you are absent. You
may also check the THS website (ths.sps.lane.edu/thshrs) for class assignments.
The website will be updated weekly. Work missed due to unexcused absences cannot
be made up.
Four field trips are
planned for the semester (see Course Outline). Field trips are not mandatory
for passing the class, but if you wish to be eligible for field trips, you must
meet the following requirement: no missing assignments, no unexcused absences,
no more than 3 tardies, and a fee of $5 (cash or check to THS) per trip to
cover transportation costs (with the exception of Salmon Watch which is paid
for by Oregon Trout). If you meet the field trip requirements but cannot afford
the fee, you may talk to the teacher privately regarding financial aid. If you
do not attend the field trips, you are expected to be present in your regularly
scheduled Natural Resources class to complete an alternative assignment with a
substitute.
Grades are calculated
using point totals from daily work, homework, lab reports, notebook points (see
Materials), projects, papers, presentations, quizzes, tests, and class
participation. You will receive 50 participation points at the beginning of
each quarter and points are added (bonus points) or deducted (see Attendance
& Tardies) accordingly. Your
attitude and level of participation can tip the grading scale in one direction
or another.
Due to the nature of
this class (lots of discussions, video segments, group projects, and
presentations), prompt and regular attendance is essential. You are considered
tardy if you are more than 1 minute late to class. After 10 minutes, you will
be marked absent. Every 3 tardies will result in the loss of 10 points (the
equivalent of one unexcused absence) from your participation grade and a phone
call home. Unexcused absences will result in the loss of 10 points per absence
from your participation grade. More than 3 unexcused absences will result in a
phone call home and a referral to counseling and/or the administration. After 6 unexcused absences, the teacher has
the option of giving you a “No Grade” designation on your report card and you
will not receive credit for the class.
No student has the right
to disrupt class and deprive others of their education. In order to maintain a
safe and positive learning environment, please:
1.
Respect yourself, others, and property.
2. Be
seated and prepared to learn when class begins.
3. Stay
on task.
4. Do
your own work.
5. No
eating or drinking during labs.
6. Clean
up after yourself.
7. Appropriate
language only, please.
There is no textbook for
this class. However, you are expected to bring a notebook and something to
write with to class every day. I STRONGLY recommend that you invest in a 1”
binder filled with notebook paper that will become your “Natural Resources
Notebook.” This notebook will be used for keeping class notes, daily work,
homework, field observations, lab reports, and other written assignments. In
effect, this notebook will become your textbook. The notebook will be collected
regularly so should not contain notes or assignments from any class other than
Natural Resources. If you do not have your notebook in class on days it is
collected, you will have 5 points deducted from the notebook grade. In
addition, it is strongly recommended that you obtain an Internet sticker for
research purposes throughout the semester.
