Text: Biology (Prentice Hall)
Overview
Biology is a one year
science course. The first semester will focus on the nature of science in the
study of ecology, biochemistry, cell biology and genetics. The second semester
will focus on the nature of science, earth evolution, biological evolution and
classification, leading up to the state wide CIM test in April. The remainder
of the year will be a survey of the kingdoms of living organisms with a focus
on fresh water ecosystems.
The course will include
lab activities, reading assignments, independent and group projects,
participation in cooperative learning groups, field activities, quizzes, tests
and final exams.
Expectations
Student conduct will be
such as to maintain a positive and safe learning environment. Classroom
expectations are based on safety and respect.
1. RESPECT...self, others and property.
2. Come to class prepared
to learn. (This means on time with materials and focused on science.)
3. Food, drink and
personal electronic devices are not allowed in the classroom.
4. Hats off when in the
room.
5. Follow safety rules at
all times and keep your work area clean.
Attendance
Due to the hands on,
laboratory nature of this class, regular on time, attendance is required. If
you are absent you are responsible for acquiring and completing all make-up
work. The extension of the due date is equal to the number of days absent.
If the absence is not
excused within 48 hours it will be considered unexcused and you will receive a
referral and a detention.
You will be marked tardy
if you are not in class and ready when the bell rings. After the third tardy,
and every tardy after that, you will be assigned detention. More than 10
minutes late and it is considered an absence.
Grading
Grades will be based on
the following scale:
100%-90% = A 89%
- 80% = B 79% - 70% = C 69% - 60% =D 59% - 0% =F
All assignments are due at
the start of class on the due date. No
late work is accepted!
Assignments and grades
will be posted regularly in the room so students will know their grade at all
times. Students are responsible for monitoring the accuracy of the posted
grades.
Students should keep all work for each quarter, as selected
pieces will be submitted for a student portfolio at the end of the quarter.
