OVERVIEW

            Physical Science is a one-semester laboratory course.  The focus will be on scientific method, measurement, machines, energy, matter, and chemistry.  This course relies heavily on laboratory activities, in class group work, and some reading and writing assignments.  Textbooks will be provided for students. Homework includes organizing, preparing reports and studying for tests.

EXPECTATIONS: Students and staff will maintain a positive, respectful, safe learning environment.

1. Speak and act in a respectful manner.                        2. Come prepared for class and ready to work.

3. Support learning for others as well as yourself.        4. Follow safety guidelines and keep work areas clean.

5. Hats, food, & beverages are not appropriate in science classrooms and labs.

MATERIALS:

        Physical science students must maintain a science notebook. This notebook should be a three ring binder so handouts can be placed inside. A pencil and writing paper is required. We often use colored pencils, calculators, and rulers. Most students find it handier to carry and use there own.

GRADING:  Nine-Week grading is based on total points calculated as a percentage:

                        A = 100 - 90 %       B = 89 - 80 % C = 79 - 70 %     D = 69 - 60%     F = > 60%

Points will be given for the following:

            Tests and Quizzes                    Written Work               Lab Performance and Reports

            Citizenship - attendance, participation, cooperation

            Current grade information is posted regularly in the classroom. If you would like a current copy of                              assignments and scores for your student, contact me.

ATTENDANCE:

Prompt and consistent attendance is essential.   It is the student’s responsibility to make up work missed.  Many labs will be available for 1 week after the original lab date.  A student missing a lab day should arrange make up time with the instructor.  When a laboratory experience is no longer available, an alternate homework activity may possible or the student can wait until the end of the quarter when all labs will be available.

Counter productive behavior, tardiness, and unexcused absences will affect the citizenship grade.  I will contact you when I have concerns. Tardiness will result in detentions served before or after school.

These are the basic operating procedures for class; however, there is always more to discuss when it comes to the education of our students.  Please feel free to contact me with questions or information.  My goal is for every student to be successful in science.
