Grading Policy/Tardy/Absence Policy for THS Band Program

  1. Grading - Grading is based on a point system which includes daily participation, class assignments and practice. (See Grade log for breakdown of points)

  2. Daily Participation - Daily participation is essential for a performance based class. This means you need to be on time and ready to play after the first two minutes class has started with your instrument and music. Each day you will receive 5 points for just showing up prepared to play. (If you forget your instrument or your music no points will be given for the day.)

  3. Attendance - Daily attendance is a must for any music program. Your participation is a must if the band program is to be successful. If you have an unexcused absence your grade will be marked down by one letter grade. This goes for marching band rehearsals as well. Any unexcused missed concert results in an automatic F. Excuses include: sickness (with note), school field trips, pre-excused absences (with at least two days notice), and emergencies that are cleared with director. Any other reason must be cleared by director. Excuses not honored: Work, concerts, going camping, etc. These are things you can avoid if you are organized and looking forward on your schedule.

  4. Tardies - A tardy is defined as a student entering the class room up to 10 minutes after the class time has begun. An excused tardy, (a note from a teacher) has no consequences. I ask that when you enter, please put the note on my stand and quickly and quietly get your instrument out, sit and join in on the activity. An unexcused tardy, one with no note, will negate three of the daily points A second unexcused tardy in the same week will again result in half of the daily points and detention will be served. A third tardy in the same week will lower a students grade by 1 for the term, your parent being called, detention, and loss of your daily points. (This is equal to one unexcused absence).

  5. Make-ups - All absences (excused or unexcused) results in no participation points for the day, although you can make up excused absences with a practice card. There is no make up for an unexcused absence or unexcused tardies. Band is a performance class and missing rehearsals harms the rest of the class with your absence or consistent tardiness. Please be respectful. If you know you are going to be late, please bring a note from your previous teacher.

  6. Practice cards: Practice should be a part of your daily homework. Not only will it improve your playing but is a lot more enjoyable if you look forward to it instead of dreading it. I ask for 2 hours a week, worth 20 points each week. For every 15 minutes above or below the 2 hour minimum will result in an addition or subtraction of 2 points. (e.g. A practice card with 2 1/2 hours will be awarded 24 points.) Practice is defined as individual time with your instrument playing your concert music, lesson material or practicing for a playing test.

  7. Playing Tests/written assignments - Every so often a playing or written test will be required. (Playing test much more often then written) These tests will vary in points.

I want this to be a positive experience for each of you. For that to occur we all need to have a singleness in purpose: to create wonderful music. These guidelines are a basis in which we can achieve excellence. If you have any questions please feel free to talk to me at any time.
