Ever since the early 1900's trains have been a
major part of Springfield's everyday life. Day and
night these iron beasts tow thousands of pounds of
products throughout the country. These products
consist of anything from charcoal to televisions.
By law each time a train approaches a railroad
crossing, it is required to sound its horn as to
warn pedestrians and vehicles of its presence.
People and animals can hear this belching horn
miles away, but if too close, they could hurt their
ears. Each day thousands of tons cross over these
tracks making perfect rhythm, but sometimes a "sour
car" is heard. This refers to a car in poor
operating condition, mainly because it needs grease
so badly that it makes a person cringe just hearing
it roll by. Listen to the audio tape and you will
no what I mean.
