Course Descriptions

Spanish 1: A year long program offered to all grade levels. There is no prerequisite, but it is recommended that you are proficient in your first language. This course emphasizes oral proficiency as a means of self-expressiona and communication with others. Students will use basic vocabulary words and simple sentences in creative, hands-on activities. Cultural and geographical learning is an integral part of the curriculum.

Spanish 1.5: A year long program especially designed for students who completed Spanish 1 with a grade below a C and who need additional help before entering Spanish 2. The course will review basic structures introduced in Spanish 1 with emphasis on practicing both oral and written skills.

Spanish 2: A year long program for students who completed Spanish 1. Basic knowledge is put to the test in communicative situations, especially short conversations, interviews and skits. Special emphasis is placed on oral proficiency through working in pairs and small groups. The culture and geography of the many Spanish speaking countries is explored in more detail.

Spanish 3: Students at this level can converse about a variety of everyday topics with a few unnatural pauses. Class communication is primarily in Spanish. Literature in Spanish is read and discussed. Cultural study continues as well as an investigation of career possibilities. Special projects, including foreign travel/study, encourage students to put their skills to use with native speakers.

Spanish 4/5: This advanced course gives students a very detailed look at the Spanish language and culture. Authentic materials such as literature, films, and music provide a model for continued oral and written practice. Students may choose to take the Advanced Placement exam for college credit.

 Bienvenus

Valerie Metcalfe

I teach French I, II, and III. I was born in Eugene, and have lived in Oregon most of my life. After obtaining a B.A. degree in psychology from Linfield College in 1989, I traveled to France where I lived and worked for a Bicycle Tour Company for two years. After this life changing experience, I returned to Oregon and obtained a B.A. in French, in 1994, and a M.Ed. in 1996 from Portland State University. I was a graduate student at the University of Poitiers, France, and have extensive travel experience. I believe French is still a valuable language for students to learn in today's world. Spare time? Camping, river running, traveling, waterskiing.

Willkommen

Rachel Beckley-Rich

Frau Beckley was born in Silverton, Oregon and had lived in 30 places by the age of six. She grew up in a 28 foot trailer, having a blast growing up more in the outdoors than in the indoors. Frau Beckley attended Sprague High School in Salem when it first opened and the University of Oregon. She organizes student trips to Germany with the GAPP program. Her hobbies include fishing, hiking, weaving and traveling. She received an Honors College B.A. and a Master's Degree in German from the University of Oregon. Supplemental education includes the Deutshe Sommer Schule am Pazifik and the Goethe Instuitute.

Each year Thurston families host students from Neckartenzligen, Germany. This is a small town in Southern Germany, near Stuttgart. In turn, our students may travel to stay with the families of the same person in Germany. This is a true exchange. Each group goes to school for three weeks and stays with a family. In addition, we spend four days in a major city, such as Munich or Berlin.

This is the 17th year of our exchange program, one of the oldest successful exchanges between the same schools on both sides fo the globe.

See Mrs. Beckley at THS if interested. Applicants must be currently enrolled in German at either Springfield or Thurston High Schools. They must also register for the next level of German in order to use the skills gained in the language and culture. Finally, good character, attendance, punctuality and passing all classes are requirements
